About us ... |
So who are we? ...Since its formation in 1923 the Society has developed over the years from small beginnings to becoming one of the top Societies in the South West. Could our founder members have envisaged such success? Not only the well received performances and many a rave review, but the manner in which it has progressed in its presentation of the many Musicals, Plays, Cabarets and Youth productions.
From its early days and up to the outbreak of war in 1939, the Musical Comedy presented all the top musicals which were in vogue at that time. Sadly nearly all of these are no longer viable for performance as styles and tastes have changed.
In the 60s and 70s the society presented many of the great shows coming from America and showing in the West End. All but a handful of the biggest names came to Barnstaple and the society continues to break new ground where and when it can, but always keeping a keen eye on a show's financial viability and constantly taking on board what the North Devon audiences will support.
In 2008 we performed Seven Brides for Seven Brothers which came to Barnstaple for only the second time ever, and in 2009 it was a North Devon premier when the society presented Lionel Bart's other great hit Blitz!
The future looks bright and will serve to show its founders what has been achieved following those early days in 1923. Long may it continue.
